A Journey of Discovery in Hepatitis B and C

About My Journey

My name is Raquel and over the next 12 months I will be travelling around the world on behalf of the World Hepatitis Alliance. As part of my tour, I will be meeting with patients, medical associations, patient groups and politicians to gain a better understanding of how countries are tackling hepatitis B and C and to share best practice from other countries...

Who am I? Well, 3½ years ago I knocked on a charity's door in London to ask if I could interview some people for my masters thesis on hepatitis. Since then I have turned a personal interest into my daily working life and have never left the hepatitis field. I have always been passionate about hepatitis – I lost someone I loved dearly to hepatitis C when I was 15 and have seen many other people needlessly suffer from hepatitis C and B through my charity work in this field.

Knowing that treatments for hepatitis C can be very effective if patients are diagnosed early and that there is a vaccine to prevent hepatitis B motivates me to continue raising awareness of these diseases which collectively affect 500 million people in the world and take 1.5 million lives a year.

I hope my journey helps bring change for the hepatitis community and that people benefit from it as a consequence. Welcome to my blog: keep up to date with my journey here!

Where will I be visiting?

On behalf of the World Hepatitis Alliance, I will be visiting the following countries to learn about how governments, patient advocacy groups and the medical community are tackling chronic hepatitis B and C:

  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • Bangladesh
  • Brazil
  • China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan)
  • Ghana
  • Poland
  • New Zealand
  • Scotland
  • USA
  • Vietnam

The New 'This is hepatitis...' Blog and How You Can Be Involved!

Hi everyone! Sorry for the long silence but I have been submerged in work since I last posted on this blog! (And when I say 'submerged', I'm taking an optimistic view on things - in reality I was drowned by work a long time ago!). Hence, it has been difficult to keep the blog posting activity as up-to-date as I had wished and I'm sorry to inform you that I will be leaving the cyber-scene as blogger. HOWEVER, I bring good news!
As mentioned before on this blog, the World Hepatitis Alliance is launching a new global website to coincide with the new campaign theme for World Hepatitis Day 2010. The website will be featuring new and updated content as well some great new interactive community tools, including a new, yes people, a brand new 'This is hepatitis...' blog. The blog will be replacing this blog, and will hopefully provide a forum in which a larger number of people around the world can come together and talk about their experiences of viral hepatitis.

As part of this new blog, the Alliance will be providing 12 people from 12 different countries the chance to tell their personal story through the launch of their own blog as part of the larger 'This is hepatitis...' blog. This is a great opportunity for someone with a personal experience of viral hepatitis to help increase awareness and educate people on what it means to live with hepatitis B and C on a day-to-day basis as well as empowering other people to speak out about their own experiences.

All 12 bloggers will have a dedicated personal blog through which they can regularly post stories and information in their own language about relevant and interesting issues on viral hepatitis.

SO...if you are interested in becoming a blogger on the new 'This is hepatitis...' blog then please let me know and I will pass on your details to the team!
